This is a rough chapter for the people of God in the Old Testament, but not without a positive message.
First, let’s start with some numerological insight. The number four in scripture is often associated with the world. For example, the world system emerges in the latter part of Genesis 4 from Cain’s descendants. There are also four directions on a compass, four corners or quarters of the earth, and four worldwide kingdoms mentioned in Daniel 2 and 7. The Lord also judges the entire earth during the great tribulation through four “horsemen ” in Revelation 6. So the world is definitely in view in this chapter, represented by the Philistines, the perennial enemies of Israel (Ezek. 25:15).
It’s also striking that four deaths occur in this chapter: Hophni, Phineas, Eli, and Mrs. Phineas (nameless). The latter dies in childbirth (4:20), thinking that all is lost and naming her poor son accordingly (Ichabod). But scripture affirms that “the triumphing of the wicked is short” (Job 20:5), so within three chapters. God’s people are back on top (7:13-14).
The world may win certain battles over God’s people, but they definitely do not win the war (Rev. 19-20). Praise the Lord!
