Right Words

Bible studies, personal reflections, media reviews, and more: "How forcible are right words!" (Job 6:25a)

Tidbits from 2 Samuel

This is more of a post for my own records, but I hope that it’s a blessing nonetheless.

2 Sam. 1:27. David was a soldier and the loss of weapons symbolized the loss of honor (cf. 1:21). Also weapons were scarcer in those days (1 Sam. 13:22).

2 Sam. 7:12-29. To underscore the fact that the David covenant is eternal, the phrase “for ever” is used in this passage eight times. The number eight in the scripture represents a new beginning, and this is a unique covenant unlike any preceding it (23:5).

2 Sam. 24:11-14. David had had enough of running from his enemies (Saul), and there had just been a famine in chapter 21.

2 Sam. 24:15. Compared to the total population, this was a modest death toll. It’s only about 5% of the census in 24:9. Note that head counts in those days typically did not include women and children (Num. 1:46, 26:51; Mt. 14.21).
