Upon completing the last chapter of 1 Samuel, one is presented with a remarkable example of reaping what one has sown (Job 4:8, 34:11; Prov. 12:14; Gal. 6:7-8; Eph. 6:9; Col. 3:23-25). In this case, it is a bad man, Saul, receiving good for welldoing in the past. When the Philistines decapitate and desecrate Saul’s body after his defeat at Gilboa, the corpse is recovered by brave men from Jabesh-gilead. So what?
Don’t miss the parting nugget from 1 Samuel. Think back to the beginning of Saul’s reign. What town did he rescue from the Ammonites in 1 Sam. 11? Yep, Jabesh-gilead! About 40 years had passed (Acts 13:21), and the men of that town had not forgotten the kindness that Saul had shown them. What a testimony of gratitude but also of God’s absolute justice, in that he rewards a wicked man for a good deed done earlier in his life, even after the man was dead! And finally, what a comfort that God does not forget any good thing that we do, whoever we are (Heb. 6:10)!
