Six Senses of “Flood” in Scripture

Noah’s flood, attested to by Christ on at least two occasions (Mt. 24:38-39; Luke 17:27), is by no means the only flood in scripture. To the contrary, there are at least five other “floods” of note.

  1. Rivers like the Euphrates (Josh. 24:2-3, 14-15; Job 20:17)
  2. Seas like the Red (Ex. 15:8, Ps. 66:6)
  3. Storm surges (Is. 28:2, Lk. 6:48)
  4. Celestial waters above space but under God’s throne (Ps. 148:4, 29:10; cf. Gen. 1:2, Rev. 4:6, etc.)
  5. Moving masses of men (Ps. 18:4, Is. 59:19, Jer. 46:8)
