The Real “Lord of the Flies”

Even if Baal-zebub (2 Kings 1:3, Mt. 12:27) does signify “lord of the flies,” the true Lord of the flies is the Lord God Almighty. He is the Creator of all “creeping things” and uses them in amazing ways throughout scripture. At this point, I’m aware of 11 types of insects/bugs in the Bible: bees, flies, locusts, bald locusts, lice, moths, gnats, ants, grasshoppers, scorpions, and hornets. There are also cankerworms, caterpillars, and palmerworms that can turn into either butterflies or moths. The insect that I would like to highlight in this post is the hornet.

Hornets are mentioned three times in the Bible, But there is an amazing unity to the references. God uses this insect exclusively to help the Israelites conquer Canaan. He promises the first generation of Israelites that emerge from Egypt that the hornets will help them do their foes (Ex. 23:28). After that generation dies out in the wilderness and the next generation prepares to enter Canaan, God promises such help from the hornets again (Deut. 7:20). To confirm that such assistance was indeed provided, God moves Joshua to mention it in his valedictory to the Israelites in retrospect (Josh. 24:12).

those of us who have been stung by hornets can appreciate the pain they inflict, so one can see how God could use a swarm of them against a military host. But the main thing to appreciate about the hornet is how God can use something so small to change the course of history. He has a reputation for that (Judg. Kings 5:2-3, Zech. 4:10, John 6:9
